Alchemy Factory Tips & Tricks: Proven 1.0 Strategies

The highest-leverage Alchemy Factory tips and tricks: what to build first, how to route wagon rail before conveyor, and which early decisions pay off fastest in version 1.0.

Quick Answer: The Three Decisions That Cover Most of the Early Advantage

Every other trick in this guide builds on three early decisions that together cover most of the early-game advantage:

  1. One beverage keg line plus one cauldron loop before anything else.
  2. Wagon rail before conveyor. The rail is the logistics backbone; the conveyor grid is the automation layer on top.
  3. Workbench utility first. Splitters, chests and walls are crafted at the physical Workbench in 1.0, not unlocked through the Tech Tree.

If you land all three, the rest of this guide is about how not to break them.

Alchemy Factory early layout: beverage keg, cauldron loop and wagon rail

What to Build First, in Order

The sequence below is the community-tested build order for a fresh 1.0 map:

OrderBuildWhy It Comes First
1Beverage keg lineStrongest 1.0 margin category, no catalyst needed
2One cauldron loopTerminal craft station for the growth potion branch
3Wagon railLogistics backbone, higher capacity than any conveyor loop
4Workbench utility splitters + chestsDecoupled from the Tech Tree in 1.0, needed before scaling
5Transmuter catalyst laneOnly after the reagent pipe can sustain two inputs

Each step assumes the previous one is already running. Skipping the wagon rail and building a second conveyor loop first is the most common early mistake, because the rail will carry the second loop’s output anyway.

Layout Traps to Avoid

These are the recurring failures that cost players a full day of rebuilding:

  • Shared cauldron input pipe. The cauldron takes one reagent per cycle. A pipe shared with another athanor starves the catalyst lane and produces empty outputs. Give every cauldron a dedicated reagent pipe.
  • Conveyor before rail. The conveyor grid is the automation layer, not the transport layer. Build the wagon rail first so the conveyor’s finished goods have somewhere to go.
  • Unlocked Tech Tree utility in Early Access. In 1.0 the non-production utility devices moved to the Workbench. If your build assumes Tech Tree splitters, those will not be there.
  • Stale catalyst tiers. The 1.0-era recipe rebalance reworked the Unstable Catalyst, Black Powder and Star Dust recipes. Any Early Access blueprint that batch-produces an old catalyst tier will now feed garbage into the athanor.

This hub page is the strategy layer. The mechanism details live in three companion guides:

Methodology & Verification

Researched and compiled by the Alchemy Automation Guild from the official 1.0 patch notes, the community changelog, and hands-on testing of fresh-map build orders. The build-order and layout-trap lists are community-reported strategies; the patch-reference entries (the 1.0-era recipe rebalance recipe rework, Workbench utility decoupling) are sourced from official Steam patch notes. Where a specific build order is a community recommendation, it is flagged as such.

Blueprint FAQs

What should I build first in Alchemy Factory? +

Start with a single beverage keg line plus one cauldron loop, then add the wagon rail. That covers your first margin loop and your logistics backbone before you commit to splitters or the transmuter.

Wagon rail or conveyor, which first? +

Route the wagon rail before the conveyor. Wagon rail has greater transport capacity than conveyor belts and is the logistics backbone; the conveyor grid is the fluid and item automation layer that comes on top of it.

What is the Workbench used for? +

In 1.0, non-production utility devices moved to the physical Workbench. Unlock splitters, storage chests and structural walls there early, because the Tech Tree is now dedicated strictly to production machines.

What is the biggest early-game mistake? +

Feeding the cauldron input pipe from a shared athanor pipe instead of a dedicated one. The cauldron takes one reagent per cycle, so a shared pipe starves it and produces empty outputs.
